Georgia College SAT Score Requirements: Verified Benchmarks for Parents

By Lauren Jones • 8 min read • Published

Why SAT Scores Matter for Georgia Colleges

Georgia is not a state where the SAT has faded into the background. The University System of Georgia has returned to requiring test scores at its most selective campuses, including UGA and Georgia Tech, and scores continue to shape admissions decisions, honors college selection, and placement across the system.

Scores also drive state money. The Zell Miller Scholarship, which covers full standard tuition at eligible public colleges, requires a 1200 SAT (combined Math and Reading in a single sitting) along with a 3.7 GPA. The HOPE Scholarship provides partial tuition support, and the gap between HOPE and Zell Miller is often decided by the SAT.

Strong math scores can also exempt students from placement exams and remedial coursework, letting STEM-bound students start directly in college-level math.

Understanding Georgia's Admissions Tiers

Tier 1

1350+ SAT Range

Highly Selective Research Flagships

Emory, Georgia Tech, UGA (Upper Quartile)

A baseline of 720+ Math is needed to be competitive for STEM programs.

Tier 2

1100–1350 SAT Range

Comprehensive State & Private Colleges

Berry, Mercer, Spelman, Oglethorpe, GCSU, UGA

A 1200 SAT unlocks the Zell Miller Scholarship.

Tier 3

950–1200 SAT Range

Regional Public Universities & Local Campuses

UNG, Piedmont, Kennesaw State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Augusta, UWG, Valdosta State

A stronger score here can mean honors college access and course placement exemptions.

The Financial Value of Higher SAT Scores

For a student who already has the GPA, crossing 1200 can be the difference between HOPE's partial award and Zell Miller's full standard tuition. Over four years, that adds up.

Parent Action Plan for Georgia Admissions

  1. Target the 75th percentile of your student's dream school.
  2. Benchmark 1200+ for Zell Miller Scholarship qualification.
  3. Lock in Module 1 algebra habits to prevent score capping.
